Work Permit Deadline: 1 January 2027
Under Georgia's Law on "Labour Migration," entrepreneurs in Georgia need a work permit if they provide services within Georgia and their clients are Georgian resident individuals or legal entities. Foreign entrepreneurs in Georgia do not need to obtain a work permit if their clients are foreign tax resident companies. The electronic application system opened on 1 March 2026. Below is what the relevant state authority confirmed, plus what it means for you in practice.
Who Needs a Work Permit?
Entrepreneurs in Georgia are required to obtain a work permit if they provide services within the territory of Georgia and their clients are Georgian resident individuals or legal entities:
- Foreign entrepreneurs in Georgia do not need to obtain a work permit if their clients are companies that are foreign tax residents.
- Foreign nationals employed by a Georgian employer (either in-office or remotely) must also obtain a work permit.
Remote Work Requirements
Foreign entrepreneurs in Georgia do not need to obtain a work permit if their clients are companies that are foreign tax residents. A work permit is only required if services are provided on Georgian territory to Georgian resident individuals or legal entities.
If, however, the nature of the work involves periodic travel to Georgia, then after obtaining the right to perform work activities, the individual will additionally be required to obtain:
- an immigration visa of category D1, and
- a work residence permit.
Application Process
Applications to obtain the right to perform work activities are submitted through Georgia's official electronic system. Detailed procedures, mandatory criteria, and a mandatory video interview with an Agency representative are part of the process — a wrong answer or a missing document is the usual reason a first submission gets rejected and has to be re-filed.
Standard state processing runs about 30 days; an expedited option is available for an extra state fee. Either way, waiting until close to 1 January 2027 to start is the single most common mistake we see.
